Wearing Out His Master’s Ass

Everyone knows that one person who has no problem kissing up to their superiors. Iago from Shakespeare’s Othello puts it very nicely when he says there are

“Many a duteous and knee-crooking knave That (doting on his own obsequious bondage) Wears out his time much like his master’s ass.”

Although I am not supporting the nefarious Iago, I think he sums up very well what we really think about kiss ups; we don’t respect them. This reminds me of an episode of my favorite TV show of all time, Friends.

In the episode “The One Where Rachel Smokes”, Rachel becomes an assistant at Ralph Lauren. Wanting to get along with her boss, Rachel goes against her principles and begins to smoke so she can connect with her boss.

It’s one thing to kiss up, but to disregard your health too? I am so disappointed in you Rachel! During this episode, I completely lose my respect for Rachel, although the whole situation does make for good comedy. At least in the end Rachel finally comes to her good senses and relies on her hard work to get along with her boss.

Bottom line, don’t wear out your master’s ass. Rely on hard work instead!
